Discover the passion and expertise behind Stephanie McDearmid BHS Coach. Learn about my journey, my unique coaching approach, and my commitment to helping you and your horse achieve your full potential.

My journey into becoming a horse riding instructor

My riding journey began at the age of nine at a local riding school, where over the next ten yesrs, I received a comprehensive grounding in both riding and horse care. After two decades as a primary school teacher in Sunderland and Cumbria, my passion for horses was rekindled. In 2019, I bought my own horse and competed up to BD Elementary and BS Novice. This inspired me to channel my teaching skills into horse riding coaching.

I embarked on my qualification journey in October 2023. By July 2025, I achieved BHSQ Stage 3 Coach in Complete Horsemanship, followed by the BHS Ride Safe Trainer Award in September. In April 2026, I attended the EQBands Accredited Coach course at The Performance Hub in Gloucestershire.

I am currently training towards BHS Stage 4 Senior Event Coach and in September 2026 I will be starting the Applied Psychology for Equestrian Coaches Centre10 course.

My unique coaching approach

What makes my coaching unique is my particular interest in horse and rider biomechanics. My aim is to help both horse and rider improve balance, strength, and suppleness. I utilise a range of modern techniques and tools, including AI rider analysis, EQBands, various on and off-horse exercises, and the Scales of Training, alongside careful observation, to ensure every rider I work with achieves their best potential.

My coaching philosophy and values

I am a firm believer that by improving the rider, you inherently improve the horse. My core value is building confidence and improving technical skills through developing trust with the riders I coach. Whether you are a competitive rider or a happy hacker, it is crucial that you feel safe and confident while riding your horse. I believe every rider, regardless of discipline, can benefit from lessons.

While I enjoy coaching all types of riders and disciplines, my focus remains on ethical, horse-friendly methods to help you and your equine partner achieve a successful partnesrship.

"Stephanie's unique approach to biomechanics has transformed my riding. I feel more connected to my horse than ever before!"
